Returning to School During COVID-19

Returning to Campus Amid COVID-19

During this unprecedented time, staying safe is of great importance as well as maintaining the emotional wellbeing of our children. Many children have benefitted from returning to our school campus, but there are challenges that some face with this new change, after having been at home for close to two years.  Children thrive when they are loved and have mental and physical safety, security, consistency, structure, and routines. It can be easy to slip into a "summer schedule" during these summer months--sleeping in, going to bed late, excessive unstructured free time and excessive screen time.  But this only makes it more difficult for them to adapt to coming to campus for a full day and these practices can contribute to anxiety.

As we help students become accustomed to campus structure and routines, we recommend you institute structure and routines at home as well.  Monday through Friday, keep a regular bedtime and wake up time. We encourage you to keep a morning routine (use the bathroom, wash hands and face, brush teeth, get dressed, etc.) and reminders about how to wash their hands and follow campus masking rules once they arrive to school. In the afternoons/evenings, have a structured time for students to unwind from their day at school, and time afterwards to complete homework. When possible, we encourage families to eat and have conversations around the table.  Students need a time to share their joys and successes as well as their worries and fears (if any).  End the day with a story or simply the words, “sleep well, I love you.”

Most importantly, as our world continues to live through a pandemic, check your child each day to see how they are feeling.  If they have any of the symptoms listed below, consider keeping them at home.  See the CNUSD COVID 19 Decision Tree below for further details on when students should stay home.  And if you have any questions, call the school front office for clarification.
